This Graceful World

Sometimes I watch you sleeping next to me

while doves and finches come and go

from the tree beyond our window.

I know the deer are grazing on the lawn,

I know the fox has come and gone

before the light. I know that when your eyes

flutter open will come a moment of surprise

for both of us. You gaze at me, and I at you:

This graceful world of ours begins anew.
