Catbird

Jazz bird, scat bird, anything goes.

How comes a song so motley

from so sleek and grey a form

slinking through the shadows in a black skull cap?

Shy bird, cry bird, let your voice fly bird

fling it twist it bring it down again

bending the reed of things as they are:

algae bloom, uncut grass, knot in wood.

Gnarl it quarrel it swirl it round again

echoing green your anthem wild

making is imitating is making it new

jazz bird scat bird everything goes
